Maintaining a firm grasp on all the ins and outs of a complex project can be a daunting task for even the seasoned project manager if she doesn't have the right tracking tools at hand. Geoff Crane of Papercut Edge and Papercut Project Monitoring created the attached spreadsheet to helps PMs keep track of major project items by breaking them out into separate tabs for tasks, costs and change requests, among other areas.

Public, private or both. These are the three basic choices when it comes to cloud computing, and there is no shortage of experts ready to tout one solution over the other. To date, the big knock against private clouds is their complexity and the need to develop a lot of in-house expertise to deploy and manage them. However, a startup called Piston Cloud Computing says it is breaking down that barrier with its CloudKey workflow system, which can be launched from any laptop with a USB port.

A lot of time and effort has been put into promoting the value of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework. But for reasons tied to budget and time, a recent survey of IT pros working mostly in SMB environments, conducted by Dimensional Research on behalf of Dell KACE, found that not only is ITIL still not widely embraced, but also that many of these companies have yet to integrate their service desks and desktop management tools — without which achieving ITIL compliance is next to impossible.
