From a friend who has been involved with computers for a long time...
When I have used the Google-like translation technologies, I am
reminded of the story of one of the first tests of artificial
language translations way back in the days of mainframes and
minicomputers. The story goes that the scientists thought that the
best test of such a program would be to take English text, turn it to
Russian and then re-translate it back to English. The closer the
final product was to the original, the better the program
worked. They started with: "The spirit is willing but the flesh is
weak." and translated it into Russian. They then took the resulting
Russian sentence and tried to translate it back to English. The end
result was "The wine is good, but the meat is rotten."
