Hey y'all,
Thanks for your suggestions about my Daddy's computer. He lives in
NC and I live in SC about 3 hours away. It will be another week or
two before I go back up there. Maybe my brother can drive down one
weekend and work on it. He knows more about computers than I do.
The really weird thing is SOMETIMES he can look at a webpage and
sometimes he can't. Sometimes his email works and sometimes it
doesn't. He has a separate icon for the email somehow or another.
Don't ask me, I didn't set it up. I hate his ISP, too.
In safe mode, I ran the virus scan (Trend micro). Also ran
Malwarebytes, too but didn't find a thing! I have Avast on my
computer and prefer it. I have learned so much from y'all!

It's a hardware problem... Seen it several times before.. I assume
you aren't capable of trouble shooting the computer's hardware or
replacing the power supply.. In your case, it wouldn't be
economically prudent.. The "geek squad" would cost $75-$100 an
hour.. A Dell gx740 with XP pro can be obtained for $200 from Tiger
Direct.. There comes a time, not to joust windmills..

For Bonnie in SC:
Try the Portable version of SUPERAntiSpyware from
http://superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html
Follow the instructions on the page!
Hope this helps, Cheryl T. (Auckland, NZ)

None of these things produced the answer. I did re-run MICROSOFT
FIXIT CENTER and it came up with one of the updates from
Microsoft.
However, I lost it somehow and after I reran MFC, it showed
nothing
wrong. I might as well pull out the rest of my hair. Thank you for
your help.... Oh, yes, the shadows have disappeared, but I don't
know why. So the problem now, is the freezing up .
I have a couple of problems. First one - suddenly I have
shadows after everything.. .the end of a sentence, end of a
word,
etc.
Second one - my Internet Explorer 8 has suddenly gone bonkers.
When I try to read an article on Yahoo, it will stay a couple
of
seconds and then the window changes to 'Windows cannot display
the
webpage'. Sometimes when playing a game with simulated slots,
it
just freezes and it takes some time to come out of it. Other
times
it randomly decides to lock up. Does it sound like a virus (I
have
run SuperAntiSpyware) or do I need to re-install Internet
Explorer?
Any help would be appreciated, it is driving me crazy.
Thank you very much.....vegaspat
buffalo says try running this tool first and see if it helps
internet explorer.

Rub Bit defender's online scan
http://www.bitdefen der.com/scanner/ online/free. html
I had already done the first one, the second one, did nothing
and the third one brought
virus detected: Gen: Trojzn.Heur. VB.nm0@de5T8Nai but could
not delete it. Do you know how to get rid of it? I ran Avast and
it didn't see it. Thanks
buffalo says most scanners have heuristic scanning built into
them.
If it picks up
registry changes or code that resembles a known virus it is
supposed
to quarantine it.
The only problem is that some companies that are legit use code
that
may have similarities to
exploits and removing them would render the program useless. There
are some with similar
names that are variants of Vundo. If you haven't yet try running
your scans in safe mode
with SAS and AVAST

Sometimes when I turn my computer off it gets as far as the
"Windows is shutting down" screen - and that's where it stops; never
shuts off completely; I have to do it manually. I wait a few
seconds, turn it back on and it almost always shuts down correctly
the second time, but if I walk away and forget to check - it stays
on all night!
I installed Soluto, which Bill recommended, and I like. Now I seem
to need a similar thing to close down!!
Thanks one and all for your help.
Anyone know a good IT guy in the Los Angeles area?

Hello Bill and other clever folk.
I recently got hit with the malware that pretends to be an AV
program,
but all it did was freeze up my computer.
I got it cleaned with the help of Mr. Google.
But my question is... is there a program that can stop that type of
malware infecting a computer?
I have a friend-built computer, 3GH, 3 gig ram,
running XP pro. SP3, and all updates.
Thankyou for all the help you guys give.
Cheers
Polly
