I thought that could be the problem. I just hated the high cost of
a new battery and they are never the same as the orginal. I will
take your advise and have it checked. Thanks so much for helping me
and getting me answer so quick. I look at your site everyday and
sometimes pick up answers to a question I might have. Thanks so
much and keep of the good work for us that can't afford to have our
computers checked. I really enjoy all the funnies you have to look
at too.

Buffalo, you suggested that readers offer their experiences with
problems described in Nerdy.
Here's a tale that others may find helpful, as I did.
A very close friend of mine (no, it wasn't me) was surfing the Net
and
was interrupted by a message from "Total PC Defender 2010" that he
had
been infected and that they had quarantined his computer but he
could
re-activate his machine by purchasing a license for life for $89.00
by
credit card. He did, because he couldn't get his computer to open
and
operate otherwise. The computer then returned to normal
functioning. He then had his computer cleaned of Total PC Defender
successfully by a
tecchie. He disputed the $89 charge with MasterCard, but they said
he
was out of luck because he'd paid for a service (unlocking the
computer), had received it, and it had worked. It didn't matter
that
he'd never wanted to have his computer locked in the first place.
The
MasterCard lady said they'd seen this extortion hundreds of times
and
never seen it disputed successfully. My friend said, "So it looks
like
an exercise in, 'when is extortion/bribe=fee for service', as in,
'If
you give me $10, I'll make sure no one slashes your tires. This is a

tough neighborhood.' Have we all not experienced that?"
Upon reflection, my friend said that when the original message
popped up
from Total PC Defender, he'd just clicked to close it, but was
unaware
that that click triggered Total PC Defender to install itself and
hold
his computer hostage. Since then, I've seen good advice like this:
"if
anything strange pops-up and tells you that you are infected, don't
click on it to close it! Instead ctrl-alt-delete, task manager and
shut down your browser and just to make sure run Malware bytes or
Super Anti Spyware and make sure nothing was downloaded. The way
these companies get by unnoticed is they send out 1 bad ad in a 1000
and then using pop-unders that open after you leave the site so you
aren't sure where it came from. Inform the site owner and stay away
for awhile while they sort it out."

Now all I have to do is remember to do this the next time a pop-up
appears. Fortunately, my Thunderbird is set to block 100% of
pop-ups,
but that doesn't mean a trojan or other malware can't find another
way in. Thanks to Nerdy for years of interesting issues and Nancy is
always in
my prayers!

Buff, I tried all those sites you sent me [re the animated
lock/unlock padlock on my computer screen]. I still have it. It
alternates between a locked padlock, and an unlocked padlock. [ 2
pics attached]. This hasn't affected my computer ops, as it just
sits in the very middle of my screen. I can't click on it to move
it, or anything. Please ask the herd for help, this is driving me
crazy.
Thanks,
Bob in Valdosta

I don't remember if you said you have a desktop or laptop. Odds are
this is something that is coming from your machine (or monitor) and
not windows. Time to RTFM (Read the Fine Manual)

A bit of worthless?? trivia from this date in history.

Y'all remember the "Back to the Future" movies?
Ok, stage set, now on with the trivia.

First, just a couple of questions to see if you
"really" don't remember.

Ya'll remember the time machine?
No? Well, my fellow time travelers, it was a Delorean.

Any one have a guess what date Doc entered into the mechanim?
It was 25 years into the future. Which of you remember that date?

That's right, way back there in the corner of the room has the
correct answer to our trivia question.

Hey! I need a new video card. Bought one on Ebay and it doesn`t fit.
I didn`t realize there were more than one kind that went in the
brown slot at the top. Can you tell me what to look for? The one I
bought is DVI. Can you tell me what the ones that go into the lower
slots like where the modem goes are called? I need the terminology!
Thanks lots, Happy Harry.

Just finished doing the Windows Anytime Upgrade (from Win 7 Home
Prem to Win 7 Professonal as I have many programs that run better on
XP. I was told I would have to download XP after upgrading,;
however, there were no links or instructions at the end of the OS
download. Any idea where we get the other downloads ??
Also, haven't seen an update on Nancy in a few weeks. We love her.

Hi B
I can successfully uninstall my HP laptop mouse pad, however each
time I
re-boot I have to go through the un-install again which requires
another
re-boot. The question is: How can I uninstall it permanently?
I go to control panel, 'mouse', hardware, properties, driver and
uninstall from there..(don't think I left out any steps)
hp laptop
firefox 3.6.6
T-bird email v3.0.5
Thanks a ton,
Chet

hmmmmm let me get this straight. Are you using a regular mouse
and want to disable the installed mouse on your computer?

B
It's the touchpad I want to permanently uninstall..my thumbs
occasionally hit it by accident and sends the letters i'm typing all
over the place...I use a wireless mouse on my laptop and touchpad
gets in the way because I don't hold my wrists up while typing...lol

combo for turning the touchpad off. Also where you were disabling
your mouse have you tried adjusting the sensitivity to the minimum
point ? NO SETTING FOR SENSITIVITY. JUST MOUSE SPEED.

Last thought in MSCONFIG is there anything relating to your mouse in
start up? NOPE Nothing in 'startup'
