Hi Buff I hav A problem I keep getting warnings to download SP 3 on my
old
compaq XP I have downloaded it 5 or 6 times and cannot restart windows I
have to start in safe mode and uninstall it.Am I doing it wrong or
what???

jtd

Having SP 3 is important as far as receiving updates to Windows and your
Browser
until it runs out of its extended period. Problems are generally caused
by either
malware or a corrupt update that doesn't get picked up by the registry.
Go into
add/remove programs and enable viewing of the updates. See if it has SP
3 listed.
It may be necessary to remove it and reload it again to get the registry
to see it.
MS has a tool for removing updates but it takes everything and it may
take awhile
especially if you have a slow connection and in the past I have had to
reload
the updates multiple times to get everything right and in several cases
reformat and start from scratch.

Hi Bill,

I have been using IE8 for quite a while (XP, so no IE9 available); for a
time now, it has been a nuisance, frequently failing to fire up until I
have tried several times.

I have put up with the failures because I trust MS is trying to protect
me from hackers, malware, etc, by using DEP (data execution prevention).

What I can't understand is that, if I just keep clicking on my icon (or
a hyperlink) IE8 will eventually start, even though I've done nothing
else.

Is there something wrong with my copy of IE8, is there something wrong
with DEP, or is there something I need to do? I have not changed to
another browser (without DEP) as my default, but I have been tempted to
do so because of the frustration involved.

I would appreciate some opinions from others.

Thanks,

Rob in Whyalla
